| What is Montessori? |
| Montessori is a comprehensive educational method designed to help children with their task of inner construction as they grow from childhood to maturity. Dr. Maria Montessori, a physician and educator, created her method and materials through observing the ways children naturally absorb information and learn, at different stages of their development. This work began with mentally disabled children and after further study and experimentation; she discovered her principles of education could be applied to all children. The beginning of the Montessori movement is attributed to the opening of the first Casa dei Bambini or Children’s House in Italy in 1907. For over 100 years, Montessori schools have been offering children an environment of respect, developing independence and a love of learning. Today, Montessori schools are found worldwide, serving children from birth through adolescence. There are more than 4,000 Montessori schools worldwide and more than 400 AMI Montessori schools in the United States. The Association Montessori Internationale (AMI), founded by Maria Montessori in 1929, maintains Montessori educational principles and disseminates Montessori education throughout the world.
